The Mental Side of Growing a Beard

For the most part, any man can grow facial hair.  It's in our genetics to do so.

Some grow beards that are the envy of all mankind, while others can barely eke out a few hairs scattered in fields of peach fuzz.  Either way, if you are trying to grow a beard, it boils down to one thing: are you mentally prepared to do so?

The biggest hurdle that new growers have to get over is time.  It takes time to grow a beard.  When you are at the two week mark, gazing at yourself in the mirror, closely examining the efforts of not shaving... don't think, "This isn't going to happen.  I can't grow a beard."  Let me tell you, two weeks isn't long enough to grow a beard.  1 month isn't long enough to grow a beard.  You will need to give it at least 6 to 8 weeks to see if you've got what it takes.  You will need some patience.  Lots, and lots of patience.

Another potential mental road block is the discomfort that you may experience: the itch.  Why does a beard itch?  Basically, there are two reasons.  For one, you've been shaving the hair off at skin level and now it is breaking through and irritating your face.  And two, once you have hair on your face, your skin dries out.  That's why we have beard oils and balms.  Luckily, the itch isn't permanent.  It should only last 2 to 3 weeks.  Applying oil or balm to your face during that time can help you get through it, but the biggest thing is that you have to be mentally strong and push through it.  It will end.  And when it does, the reward is more than worth it.

Finally, you have to realize that you are your own, worst critic.  if you are constantly worrying about what others are thinking when it comes to your beard, you're going to have a bad time.  Get over that.  You are the only one that scrutinizes how thin or patchy it might be, or how that one side lays the wrong way, or how it looks like hair from your nether regions.  Get it in your head... everyone else sees you as a person... an overall entity.  They don't look at you and think, "His beard is so gross.  He should shave."  Okay, maybe some do.  But those people don't matter.  The only opinion that matters is your own.  Make your life easier, and be your own man.

If you are growing, or thinking about growing a beard - get your mind right first.  Things will go a lot smoother for you.

So true. A man’s beard and growing it is really more art than science. It takes time and has to it a natural process. This article is spot on. Thanks Nate!
